It Follows

Every once in a while I like to watch a good scary movie. Maria hates them. So when I do watch them it's usually alone late at night after she's gone to bed. I had heard that "It Follows" was one of the best horror films to be released in a few years. It's been getting a buzz. So I watched it last night.

It was good. It wasn't a masterpiece but I enjoyed it. It had a great "look". It only had a few gory scenes and only a few jump scenes. For the most part they do an excellent job of just building the suspense and paranoia. I also loved the 80's synth score.

but...

I just couldn't get past the main plot device. (spoiler alert) If you have sex YOU WILL DIE!

In this case the curse is passed on by having sex with someone else. "It" follows you if you are last in line and tries to kill you. Unless you have sex with someone else and pass on the curse. But even if you pass it on if It kills the next person in line before they have sex it goes back down the line. There is also this thing that if you are the one with the curse you can see It but regular people can't see It. But if you've had the curse you can see It even if you've passed it on to someone else.

The movie was just scary and freaked out enough that I had trouble sleeping last night. I also had trouble sleeping because I kept on thinking about It and all the questions I had.

It seemed like the curse was spread by fucking. Intercourse. Sex. So... do blowjobs count?! Really...  what is sex in a way? It seemed like a very traditional view. Sex was a man and a woman and when the man had an orgasm the curse moved on to the next person.

So would male male sex count? What about two ladies?

What if the person with the curse decided to have a 3sum? Would they pass on the curse to both people? Just the first person? The last person they had sex with? Would all three of them be able to see It?

The characters in the movie came up with their own way of killing It (maybe?!) but to me there seemed a very obvious solution. The lady with the curse should have just gone to an MFA gangbang party! Think about it. In less than an hour or two the curse would go from person to person all night. Who knows who would have it in the end?! It is always drawn to the person with the curse. It would enter the house and go down the basement and wouldn't know what to do! According the the movie everyone in the room would be able to see It as well so it couldn't hide. Game over!

At first I thought it was a slut shaming movie. Have sex and die. But then it hit me that it encourages sex in a weird way? You've got to fuck to get rid of this thing. Is it about STDs? It's a sexually transmitted demon. But once again a fucked up confused message. You fuck someone else and you're cured of the disease? Maybe? If the next person goes out and fucks someone else soon. If they don't and It kills them you're cursed again. So is this movie saying that everyone should fuck as many people as they can as often as they can?!

So yeah. I tossed and turned all night while thinking about this stupid shit and the scary parts of the movie. If you like classic horror films I would recommend it just because of the look and feel of it. But the details in the plot device will drive you crazy if you think about it too much!
