Comments at work

My particular profession is by and large made up of women. I'm the rare guy. I'm not a male nurse like Ben Stiller in Meet the Parents but it's sorta like that. So, I listen to my female coworkers talk all the time. They've gotten used to me by this point. I'm just one of the girls. So the talk is often "interesting".

Recently two comments came up that made me sort of laugh inside. About a week ago one of the ladies was talking about a couple that she heard might be swingers. She's a total gossip. It was pure speculation on her part. Then she said something like, "yeah, they might be part of the HUGE swinging scene in the Northshore." She said it totally sarcastically. She's also the type of person who likes to think she knows the inside scoop on everything that's going on. All I could think to myself was, "OMG how little you know! I know from looking at the web sites that there are TONS of swinging couples in the Northshore!" I kept my mouth shut and didn't say a word.

Then just the other day the ladies were talking again. They started talking about the resorts in Jamaica. One of them said, "what's the name of that gross place where all the fat old disgusting swingers go?" I said to myself, "what?!" and one of the other ladies said, "I think it's called Hedonism." The way the one lady talked about Hedonism though. It was like venom coming off her lips. She made it sound like the worst place in the world. One of the other ladies said, "can you imagine walking around nude all day? I just couldn't deal with that." All the ladies pretty much said, "yeah..." I said in a joking way, "You guys are all just prudes!" Everyone laughed and I didn't say another word about it.

I'm sure my coworkers would be so shocked if they knew what Maria and I did on the weekends. But I was a little shocked myself to think of the vitriol they would probably heap on me behind my back if they knew. Evidently to my coworkers swingers are fat and ugly and gross and disgusting. Wow...

I listen to Dan Savage a fair amount and he thinks that poly people need to come out of the closet like gay people did. That we poly people suffer a lot of discrimination and hatred and are misunderstood. Would my coworkers be more accepting of the lifestyle if they knew I was in it? Just regular old me. The guy they go to work with every day who hardly ever even mentions sex at work. Not going to happen though. Staying in the closet for now!
